Hattiesburg Internet Connection

The BellSouth T1 connection we have between Jackson and Hattiesburg was down today due to telco equipment failure. Connectivity was lost at 3:55 PM and was not restored until 7:55 PM. This is the second time this quarter we have been cut off from our fastest growing, Internet hungry site due to BellSouth reliability problems.

NOTE:
AS BELLSOUTH DOES NOT MONITOR THEIR LINES, WE HAD TO REPORT THE TROUBLE AND WAIT FOR TWO HOURS UNTIL TECHNICIANS COULD LOOK AT THE SITUATION AND DETERMINE THERE WAS A PROBLEM.

  • To answer a few questions from the 500 or so calls to the NOC in the last 4 hours:
  1. NO, BellSouth does not monitor their own circuits. They expect you to call to report trouble.
  2. NO, BellSouth has not presented any ideas to us about increasing the reliability of their circuits nor done anything to improve reliability.
  3. NO, we cannot make any promises that BellSouth will not have this problem in the future (or tomorrow for that matter).
  4. NO, we do not have another telecommunications provider to use other than BellSouth in Hattiesburg. As well, we do not believe there will be one any time soon. There is no other choice or we would evaluate it.

Software Upgrades

During the early morning hours of Tuesday, April 29, we performed a software upgrade to many of the U.S. Robotics x2 digital modems in operation. Starkville, Meridian and Tupelo were fully upgraded by 6:00 AM. Jackson and Hattiesburg still have a few modems to be upgraded and will be completed within the next 24 hours. The upgrade was performed to address "several disconnect related issues" per conversations with tech support personnel.

Additional Internet Bandwidth Scheduled

A few weeks ago, we announced plans to increase our bandwidth to the Internet. As of today, the scheduled date of this upgrade is Tuesday, May 6th. In the past, we have performed upgrades of this magnitude during the early morning hours to minimize impact on our customers. Due to the complexity of this upgrade, we may be forced to perform this operation during "normal" business hours (i.e. 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM) in order to coordinate this switch with MCI and Brooks Fiber Communications. We will be encouraging all parties involved to perform this switch between the hours of 8:00 AM and 12:00 PM.

The estimated duration of the scheduled upgrade is between 30 and 90 minutes.

Hattiesburg Area Dialup

We have been receiving calls from the Hattiesburg area about "fast busy" signals starting around 9:00 PM and have BellSouth looking at the situation. We expect the problem to be cleared up within the next 12 hours per support calls to them.

With the recent addition of U.S. Robotics x2 technology in the Starkville area, we have completed our rollout of this enhanced digital service. Starkville x2 Technology Today!

At 2:00 PM, BellSouth will switch the 323-4600 line to point to our new facilities capable of the new U.S. Robotics x2 modem technology. As we have had limited testing on these new modems, please do not hesitate to call if you believe there are problems. To date, we have tested the functionality of x2, ppp and shell access. The need for speed can be met with NETDOOR and U.S. Robotics.

Due to the upgrade of the network in Starkville, we will be taking on new customers in this area as of today.

Hattiesburg Area Information

Thanks to great anticipation by BellSouth and NETDOOR, we were able to add more modems last Friday to this growing area. If you know of someone in need of either individual or corporate Internet access, please have them call us or pick up a copy of our connection CDROM today. Most locations in Hattiesburg have been restocked with the FREE CDROM as of Saturday. Get them while they're hot ... we'll make more.

Greenwood and Carthage Modem Upgrades

We will be transitioning the U.S. Robotics Analog modems from Starkville to both Greenwood and Carthage in the next few weeks. Although the speed upgrade is just from 28.8k to 33.6k for these modems, the reliability will be greatly improved.

Thursday, April 10

Starkville Schedule Changed

Due to several factors, our planned upgrade to x2 and all digital modem technology, has been postponed until Monday, April 14. The new equipment is in place, but both NETDOOR and our telco need an extra weekday to make the final configuration changes. Sorry for the last minute notification, but it will enable us to complete several performance and reliability tests.

Hattiesburg Internet

Due to the recent changes in the local Internet market, we have ordered additional facilities to handle the increased number of dialup and dedicated customers. We will be watching the dialup market very close in the next two weeks to ensure our level of connectivity remains as high possible.

Starkville Upgrade to U.S. Robotics x2 Modem Technology

We have ordered the all digital, x2 capable modems for the Starkville area POP and expect them to arrive in the next 48 hours. Installation of the equipment is set for Friday, April 11. The old number, 323-4600, can be used to access this new bank of modems. The performance, reliability and accessibility of dialup connections should all be improved with these new digital modems. At this time, we will begin to take on more customers in the area as well. Thank you for your patience with us in making this new technology available to you.

More Internet Bandwidth on the Way

In the coming weeks, we will be adding additional INTERNET bandwidth through MCI (in the form of a Fractional T3 connection). As part of this installation, we will be moving most of our telco lines to Brooks Fiber Communications of Mississippi. There will be periods of inaccessibility in the days to come. As with our other scheduled outages and upgrades, we will be performing the work during the early morning hours where feasible. More information about the times and dates will be released in the future on this web page as it becomes available.

NETDOOR Advantage Pack 3.0 Released

We will be receiving the third version of our Free, connection CDROM in the next few days and will be releasing it to our Distribution Points throughout the state. If you know of someone that needs of copy of the CD mailed to them, just have them drop by one of our local dealers or call our Support Center at 800.952.1570 anytime, 24 hours a day.

Customers that already have a version of the NETDOOR Advantage Pack or have a functioning NETDOOR Internet setup are discouraged from using this new CDROM as it is designed for a first time NETDOOR user only.

Wednesday, April 2

The Hattiesburg to Jackson connection was down from 8:24 PM to 1:32 AM on April 3rd due to a failed component in our BellSouth circuit. Technicians determined the cause for the outage was a failed repeater (the same problem we had in 1995) in a manhole between our office and the phone company Central Office. Customers that attempted to dial-in during this time were unable to establish a connection or had other connectivity issues. On a side note, the Hattiesburg site has not had a data connectivity related problem since July of last year (over 8 months ago during an extended power outage).

Software Upgrades

We will be performing software upgrades on selected terminal servers throughout the network in the early morning hours of Sunday, March 23. This enhancement is supposed to improve the performance of both analog and digital connections to the network. Upgrades will start at 4:00 AM and will last up to 30 minutes per terminal server. Areas most effected are Jackson and Hattiesburg. People online at the time of the upgrade will be temporarily disconnected and e-mailed the above information.

U.S. Robotics x2 Deployment Announcement

NETDOOR will be rolling out the U.S. Robotics 56k x2 Technology this week in supported locations. This new advancement in analog dialup extends the gap between standard analog modems and the expensive upgrades in technology such as ISDN. Not only is this octane boost great for downloading on the net, but is provided at no additional charge to our customers. We are looking at alternatives that may enable us to support this speed in other locations, such as Starkville and Greenwood. Expect further information on this in the coming days. Laurel POP

After extensive searching, we still have not found a suitable site for our extremely patient customers in this area. If you have any ideas, please do not hesitate to mail them to site-dev@netdoor.com. Another day of planning will be scheduled for early this week in hopes of finding a telco-friendly site.

MCI Network Update

This afternoon we received the following email from a network administrator with MCI regarding the recent "slowdowns" we have been experiencing:

(excerpt from inter-office email)

"MCI's Internet Network Operation Center began seeing adjacency losses on one of our core routers in the Dallas Main Place pop on monday 3/1. This problem was initially attributed to Cisco 11.1 code which we are deploying on our network. The problem was escalated to our engineering staff who began pursuing it with Cisco on tuesday, 3/2. At this point it was pursued as a low priority performance problem since it was not apparent that a significant number of customers was being affected.

...it became apparent that the problem was more widespread than we had thought and Cisco was pressured for a solution. As a work around we shut down this core router. We were reluctant to do this since this it removes redundancy in the network.

Cisco's response was to replace the ATM interface card which we did. This corrected the problem"

We will continue to monitor the performance of this circuit for some time to assure the highest quality connection.

Carthage POP

The new Carthage dial in location is up and ready to accept callers. The number for this POP is 298.1240. If you have any problems, please call our technical support center at 800.952.1570.

MCI network problem

Sometime on Friday our technical staff and several customers noticed intermitent packet loss and general network slowdowns when downloading information from the Internet. This problem was reported to MCI and is being looked into by them. A follow-up today has gained little information other than MCI and their router vendor Cisco are looking into the problem as a "Backbone Trouble Ticket". The severity level is high and is expected to be handled accordingly. A special thanks to our customers who helped bring this to the forefront via our 24/7 technical support lines.

News Server

After a long night and early morning, our UNIX Administrators were able to revive the news server. During the process, they managed to ensure no news was lost. We appreciate your patience while the news server was inaccessible during the early part of today.

Mail Server - COMPLETED 7:48 AM

We will be replacing the mail server's OS drive in the early morning hours of Sunday to replace a defective root drive as mentioned a few days ago. During the maintenance window, you will not be able to send or retrieve e-mail. Mail on the server will be retained as it is on another hard drive. The server will be down for up to 3 hours while the drive is replaced. As we utilize multiple servers for the many services we provide, no other service will be negatively impacted.

Problem Notification/Resolution

As you may have noticed, when it rains at NETDOOR, it sometimes pours. Our reliability rating is still around 98% for the many services our system provides, and we are constantly adding/upgrading servers to handle the traffic across the NETDOOR network.

We maintain a Network Status Report to help customers see what is and is not functioning. This page is maintained by the admin team and is updated as deemed necessary to help keep you informed. Unlike other providers, we make sure everyone on our service and the Internet can see our network availability. Just another reason there truly is a NETDOOR advantage.

News Server - NOTICE 12:45 AM

Although the new news server has been the subject of many compliments in the last few days, the OS drive is currently experiencing SCSI problems. Due to this drive failure, the news server experienced erratic behavior and even crashed several times Friday night. It will be going down for Emergency Maintenance at 12:45 AM to replace the defective drive.

Carthage POP

Due to several technical issues today, the Carthage POP was not brought online. The estimated time of network functionality will be no earlier than Tuesday at 2:00 PM. We apologize for the delay, but ran into several problems including data and phone line troubles. We will post more information on this page as it becomes available.

Thursday, February 27

Mail Server (mail.netdoor.com)

We posted a notice yesterday that the mail server would be undergoing a hardware replacement in the next 72 hours to fix a defective OS drive. This outage has not occured as of this writing, but has led to some amount of confusion with people having normal problems with their mail applications. The mail server has not been down and is operating normally. If you have any questions or need assistance, please email support@netdoor.com or call our 24 support center at 800.952.1570.

Carthage POP

A technician will be completing the installation of the new Carthage site before midnight tonight. Starting tomorrow morning at 2:00 PM, we will be accepting dialups to this new number. Don't forget, the number for this location will be 298-1240. Wednesday, February 26 (9:00 PM)

Jackson Modem Upgrade

Today, BellSouth installed additional dialup facilities in our Jackson POP. Later in the day, a technician recognized a potential terminal server error and a backup terminal server was installed in its place. Customers connected to this terminal server were disconnected while the hardware was replaced. We apologize for any inconvience this may have caused.

Wednesday, February 26

Personal Webserver Upgrade (www2.netdoor.com)

Early this morning the personal webserver underwent the planned upgrade. Although we have tested the server thoroughly, please notify support@netdoor.com or call the 24 support lines at 800.952.1570 for problem notification. The performance of the machine will be significantly better during peak network activity. As of this upgrade, we have completed the planned upgrades to the existing servers for this quarter.

Mail Server Outage (mail.netdoor.com)

Our mail server will undergo an Emergency hardware replacement in the next 72 hours to swap a defective OS drive. We will also be utilizing this window for an OS upgrade and mail software updates. This outage will be performed in the early morning hours to minimize customer impact. No mail will be lost during the outage period, but will be kept on a backup mail server until the machine's drive is replaced. During this maintenance window, you will not be able to send or retrieve mail. The outage is expected to last for 2-4 hours. As always, the Network Status Report will track its availability.

Carthage POP Opening

The Carthage POP will be operational sometime Thursday evening if all goes as planned. The number for this location will be 298-1240. Laurel POP Information

As our Laurel customers are well aware, we have been struggling with site related problems for the last few months. We apologize for the delay and are working diligently to find a new location as soon as possible. A member of our planning committee will be in the area on Friday and again on Tuesday to find a suitable location. We will coordinate the site approval with our marketing and technical reps at BellSouth so a "telco friendly" location will be ensured. As this new location has been announced and then postponed several times, it has reached the highest priority level for site development. Again, we apologize for the unnecessarily long install. News Server Upgrade (news.netdoor.com)

The upgrade to the news server this morning went a little less than perfect, but the hardwork and dilligence by our Administrative team kept the project moving. They were able to complete the install around 4:00 PM today. A special thanks goes out the them for their dedicatation and focus, even after an 18+ hour shift. A few configuration changes will be necessary in the next 36 hours and will be performed in the early morning hours. News reader impact should be minimal.

Personal Webserver Upgrade (www2.netdoor.com)

We will be preparing a new personal webserver in the next few days for installation sometime later in the week. This upgrade will improve the performance of the machine significantly during the busy night time traffic periods. Look for the announcement of the install date and downtime on this page in the days ahead.

News Server Upgrade/Rescheduled

Due to timing conflicts the other day, we will be performing the upgrade to the news server Saturday morning starting at 1:00 AM. During this time, you will be unable to connect to the news server. As a result of the upgrade, we will be formating the news server data drives when changing the OS of the server. This procedure will result in the loss of the news acticles currently stored on the machine. The upgrade process will take 2-4 hours.

We expect the news server to catch back up to current levels of news within 72 hours. Please be patient while we perform the upgrade as a few configuration changes and periods of unavailability are expected during the first 24 hours of operation. We will continue to monitor its progress closely for the first two weeks to ensure optimal levels of news are kept.

USR Terminal Server Swaps

USRobotics has shipped us new terminal servers along with an updated revision of the code that runs on them. We will be changing these terminal servers out during the early morning hours of Saturday in our Jackson POP. People online at the time of the upgrade will be temporarily disconnected as the hardware is replaced. Hattiesburg and Tupelo are expected the have this operation performed in the next 14 days (the Meridian upgrade has already been performed).

We apolgize for any inconvience the upgrades will cause. As in the past, we utilize the low volume times for system upgrades to minimize the impact on services and number of customers. Meridian POP Upgraded

Meridian Point of Presence was upgraded to the ALL digital PRI setup on Monday, February 17th.

What this means to you is the increased capability of connecting at 33.6 kbps (depending upon your phone conditions) and the flexibility of upgrading to faster speeds later, which includes the NEW 56kbps x2 Technology from US Robotics and dialup ISDN. These newer modems are faster, more reliable, and have been used with great success in our other metropolitan areas (Jackson, Hattiesburg, and Tupelo).

Unfortunately, with this new and improved service, there will be a phone number change. The new dial-up number for the Meridian area is 693-3305, and went into effect on Monday, February 17th at 5:01pm. The old number (481-1025) will remain operational until sometime later in the week.

News Server Replacement Scheduled

We will be performing an upgrade/replacement on the News server during the early morning hours of Thursday. At this time, all news currently stored on the server will be lost, but with the increased CPU, Memory and disk capacity, we expect it to catch back up to current levels of news within 72 hours. Please be patient while we perform the upgrade as a few configuration changes and periods of unavailability are expected during the first 24 hours of operation. We will continue to monitor its progress closely for the first two weeks to ensure optimal levels of news are kept.

System Upgrades Announced

The dial-in authentication server was upgraded during the early morning hours of February 9th, as well as a maintenance reboot of most of the terminal servers and modems on the network. NETDOOR will be upgrading several servers and services in the next few weeks as part of our continual push for performance and reliability. The personal webserver and news server are scheduled to have increased processing power, more memory and disk space as well as 100 Megabit switched Ethernet connections to the LAN in our Internet interconnection point in Jackson, MS. As always, we insure the information you want gets to you as fast as possible.

USRobotics NetServer PRI Upgrade/x2 Availability

In the latest release of their code (v3.3.28) for the NetServer PRI terminal servers, a bug was found in a chip used on the high performance cards. We are testing an updated card in our Jackson POP per instructions from USR support personnel. If found to correct the problem, we will be replacing all the USRobotics terminal servers on the network to this newly released network application card (NAC).

Want to know more about 56k and USR? Check out this USR FAQ about this exciting new technology. NETDOOR will be offering it in locations that utilize PRI such as Jackson, Hattiesburg, Tupelo and hopefully Meridian and Starkville. Their will be NO charge for this high octane boost other than an x2 capable modem from USRobotics or a vendor that uses the USR x2 chipset.

Additional Lines for Jackson Scheduled

BellSouth has a tentative install date of today for additional dialin capacity. This upgrade is one of two scheduled for the Jackson POP within the next 30 days and should help the peak hour busy you may have experienced in the last 10 days.

NETDOOR Advantage Pack 2.0 Released

The newest version of our easy access, first time customer software will be released to our distribution sites starting Wednesday, February 5th. Monday, we will be shipping backordered CD's to customers that have requested them since the second week of January. Thank you and your friends for your patience.

Laurel site nears completion

We are in the final stages of working through the install problems and shooting for project completion around the 12th of February for this POP. As the install date is finalized, we will be posting it to this web page. The announcement is expected on Friday, February 7th.

Meridian Equipment/Capacity Planned

The replacement of all the dialin facilities along with additional capacity is nearing the final stages of planning. We expect the new hardware, capable of both 56k Analog Dialin utilizing USRobotics x2 Technology and dialup ISDN availability, to be installed within the next 21 days. After many months of on again, off again line problems, we expect our friends at USR and BellSouth to help us regain the reliability most other areas are accustom to. We will also be issuing credit of one month of service to those customers who had active accounts in December and who have active accounts in February (Details will be emailed to customers). New Software Released to Manufacturing

The 2.0 Version of the NETDOOR Advantage Pack CDROM will be released to manufacturing Tuesday, January 21. Availability of the software will be within the next 10-15 days.

This revision contains the updated Internet Explorer 3.01 for Windows 95 and Internet Explorer 3.0 for Windows 3.1, as well as Microsoft Internet Mail and News, Comic Chat, Microsoft Netmeeting, Active Movie and HTML Layout Control. Included in this new release will be several "Extras" for both versions of Windows, such as a local copy of Eudora Light 1.5.4, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Free Agent News Reader, CRT Telnet, mIRC and Virc for 95. Customers that already have the 1.0 release of the NETDOOR Advantage Pack can obtain the updated web browser via this URL (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/download/default.asp).

The Advantage Pack CDROM is designed for first time users and is provided for FREE at several locations in the state or by calling our 24 hour support lines at 800.952.1570. Thanks goes to our distribution sites for their support of NETDOOR.

Laurel POP Delayed

BellSouth has informed us the Laurel POP needs facilities upgrades to complete the installation of the necessary telecommuncations lines for our opening scheduled for January 20th. We were told the scheduled install date is now February 12th. Due to this delay, we are investigating several alternatives to push the install date up to a more reasonable time frame and will be making annoucements as to the completion status. Until further notice the Hattiesburg/Laurel 544-1141 number will remain active until we are able to complete the install.

Carthage Site Announced

We will be opening our 8th location in the state in early February. As part of this expansion site, Internet Doorway will provide the local library system with dialin access. Thanks goes to the many local supporters of NETDOOR for allowing us to provide access to the community.

Hattiesburg New Lines Installed

We have completed the installation of additional lines for our Hattiesburg area customers. Final testing and availability should be sometime Monday. As always, we continue to provide the necessary facilities when the need arises.

Wednesday, January 15

Discontinuation of Educational Pricing/University Access

Due to many factors, NETDOOR will no longer offer educational pricing after January 15, 1997. Customers that currently have educational pricing can elect to continue their accounts under our Full Access Solution. To verify the account's continuation, please take a moment and fill out our service authorization form.

The new pricing will take effect at the end of each customer's current billing cycle. Customer's that do not fill out the authorization form will have their account cancelled when their current billing cycle runs out. Please check the Online Billing Information pages for account information.

Laurel POP Opening

Our Laurel POP should be complete by the middle of next week. At this time, we will be shutting down the old Hattiesburg 544-1141 number. When we are ready to take dialins, we will post an announcement and inform our customers of the new number. If you need help changing the dialup number in your applications, please call our tech support line at 800.952.1570 anytime 24 hours a day.

Meridian to get PRI Equipment

Our Meridian customers will enjoy better connectivity and the latest in USRobotics enhancements when our Meridian POP gets PRI dialup equipment installed. Not only will dialup ISDN and the soon to be released 56k dialup be achievable, but our standard 28.8k/33.6k customers will gain better connect rates and connection reliability. The date for the install has not yet been set, but should be sometime in the next 30-40 days. Please read this announcement page regularly to keep informed of the progress.

New Lines in Hattiesburg and Jackson

The Jackson and Hattiesburg POP's are scheduled to have additional lines installed to help meet the increase in the number of customers since the beginning of the new year. Hattiesburg may have lines installed as soon as today, with Jackson a week or so behind that. Thank you for your patience as we upgrade our facilities.

Tupelo to get all digital lines. Phone number to change.

The Tupelo Point of Presence will finally get the upgrade you've been waiting for. We will be upgrading the exisiting connection in the Tupelo area to an ALL digital PRI!

What this means to you is the increased capability of connecting at 33.6 kbps (depending upon your phone conditions) and the flexibility of upgrading to faster speeds later, which includes the NEW 56kbps X2 Technology from US Robotics and ISDN. These newer modems are faster, more reliable, and have been used with great success in our other metropolitan areas.

Unfortunately, with this new and improved service, there will be a phone number change. The new dial-up number for the Tupelo area is 842-6002, and it will go into effect on Wednesday, January 8th at 5:01pm.

Wednesday, January 1

Due to the high number of early morning dialup customers, we did not perform all the tasks specified below. We will be rescheduling the events of yesterday to the early morning hours of Thursday, January 2.

Nothing but good news for the coming year we hope. 56k Analog dialup from our friends at USR, more ISDN dialup locations and better pricing, lower Commercial Web pricing, and much more.
