Internet Doorway ONLY Development Area
Network Status Report

Tuesday, December 31

To facilitate the move of our modems in the Jackson POP to another dedicated power source, connections will suspended while they are switched. To minimize the inconvenience, this will occur during the early morning hours of Monday, January 1 at 3:00am.

There will also be a mail server (SMTP and POP) outage while we upgrade the existing server due to possible drive problems. This maintenance cycle is scheduled for the period following the modem switch, beginning at approximately 3:30am.

A bad terminator on the local network in the Greenwood area caused some sporadic performance yesterday. The issue was quickly solved by Network Operations and the defective part was replaced.

Thanks go to all those who called in to alert us to the problem. If you have any questions about this outage or have any problems in the future, please call our Network Operations Center anytime at 800.952.1570.

Saturday, December 14

We will be performing a hard drive upgrade of (lance), Sunday morning starting at 3:30 AM. During this time, shell accounts, and personal home page updates will be disabled as we move the data to new drives. The upgrade is scheduled to take between 2-4 hours. We will also be adding more memory and a faster processor to (club) and more memory to our DNS server if time permits.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. If you have any questions about this outage or have any problems, please call our Network Operations Center anytime at 800.952.1570.

Monday, December 9

There are possible modem problems in Starkville that will be looked into during the early morning hours of Tuesday (4:00 AM) as part of a maintanence window. During this time, we will also be upgrading several terminal servers in the Hattiesburg area to enable some ISDN dialup features.

The Greenwood facilities scheduled for a Wednesday install are a go per BellSouth communications today. There will be a short outage around 2:00 PM while we replace a router and add the new lines, but it will increase capacity by 50% in just a few short minutes. People connected at the time will be terminated and be notified by email.

We apologize for any inconvience this may cause. Early morning maintanence periods are utililized whenever possible due to the lower volume of calls during those times.

Don't forget to tell us how we are doing, as we try to maintain a close watch on what our customers desire as part of our ongoing growth and the Internet as a whole.

The news is out! about USR x2 Technology.

Tuesday, December 3

There will be a mail server (SMTP and POP) outage while we upgrade and replace the existing server due to possible drive problems. The first of two outages will be Wednesday morning at 4:00 AM. This phase of the upgrade is scheduled for approximately 45 minutes. The second outage will be Thursday morning at 4:00 AM for the swap over to the new system. This phase is scheduled to be completed by 5:00 AM. During these windows, it will not be possible to send or retrieve e-mail. Mail sent to you during this time will be held at an alternative location for forwarding within 1-4 hours.

Our Greenwood facility is scheduled to have a long awaited upgrade of the number of dialin connections by Wednesday, December 11. We apologize for the time it has taken us to respond to customer demand. Our Jackson area customers will as well, recieve an additional increase in modems for the dialup pool sometime this Friday.

Sunday, December 1

On Saturday morning at 7:30 AM and again at 7:58 AM, one of our Ethernet switches went into a state of confusion. A technician was able to physically reset the switch at which time normal operation of the device was restored. We will be contacting the vendor on Monday as a follow up to the equipment failure.

Early this morning during a BellSouth software upgrade, our Starkville area customers were cutoff from us at 3:50 AM. The site was back up at 5:11 AM for customer connections.

Synced Billing Dates

December 1 1996
We will be upgrading to a new version of our billing program in a few days in response to several customer requests for features. Although there are not many software packages for ISP's, our vendor has worked closely with NETDOOR in making the features such as online billing, e-mail statements and other extras come to life. Some of the notable improvements to come are:

  • Syncronized Statement Dates
  • Checking Account Drafts
  • Automatic Credit Card Payments (with e-mail notification in the future)
  • Editable Online Information Screens
  • More detailed Usage Reports (for more than the current month)

As we sync the billing dates, you may notice in the first month, a statement that covers more than one month of billing. We are not overcharging, but adhering to our billing policies as stated on our homepage. Please do not be alarmed, but carefully check the statement and our online billing program for details. If the answer to your questions cannot be met from either of these areas, please e-mail our billing department or call our office and ask to speak to someone in our billing department.

The NETDOOR Advantage Pack in on the way! Please check this page in the next few days for the big announcement.

Thursday, November 28

As per our schedule, the lines in our Jackson facility and the additional network bandwidth in Hattiesburg, have been completed. Customers in these areas should see a noticable level of improvement. As always, we try to respond to demand as quickly as possible.

The announcements for Laurel, Greenwood and Meridian have been postponed until early next week. We apologize for the delay.

Don't forget to check out our Thanksgiving Day Page. If you know of a site that may be of interest, please call or email it to us

Wednesday, November 20

More lines scheduled for Friday, November 22 in our Jackson POP.

Please take a moment to fill out our Personal Hardware/Software survey form. With this information, we can better serve our customers by having the details available to our technical support personnel at call time.

There will be additional announcements for our Greenwood, Meridian and soon to be Laurel sites sometime next week. Please check back.

Sunday, November 17

There is an Emergency Maintenance Outage from 4:00 AM - 4:30 AM in our Jackson POP and from 4:30 AM - 5:00 AM in our Hattiesburg area POP early Monday morning. This window will be used to upgrade the USR software suite to the latest versions that have been certified to work together. Although the upgrade was not previously brought to our attention by US Robotics Technical Support personnel, we have seen an alarming number of disconnects in these areas. Customers dialed into these locations during this maintenance window will be disconnected from the network while the software upgrade is being performed.

We would like to thank the many customers who have e-mailed or called in this disconnect report. This kind of help will allow us all to enjoy the service as before.

If you experience any problems outside this outage, please e-mail or call our NOC 24 hours a day at 800.952.1570.

Monday, November 11

There will be a scheduled maintenance window from 4:00 - 4:20 in our Jackson and Hattiesburg locations to upgrade the software on some PRI/T1 Application Cards. Anyone connected to the network at this time in these locations will be temporarily disconnected from the Internet. The new software is supposed to work better with ISDN and other high speed modems, and hand off analog calls to the digital modems more efficiently.

Some people may have noticed the increased number of news articles in the most popular USEnet news groups lately. But, we are both encouraged and concerned with the sudden influx of data. Less than six weeks ago, the average amount of news we were recieving per day was under 1 Gig. Today the number has risen to over 2.5 Gigs and counting. We are working to try and keep on top of it. Please check the Network Status Page or e-mail if you believe there is a problem.

Tuesday, November 5

After recoiling from a rough Saturday night, all services were deemed normal at 2:10 PM on Sunday. With the quick thinking of one of our System Administrators and help from a Sun Microsystems Engineer were able to recover data from a hard drive that was thought to be lost. Our backup procedures were in place and helped in the decision making process, as we knew we could go back a few hours to recover the data just in case other measures failed.

Monday night was a busy one for most of our locations. Customers should know by our recent annoucement that additional facilities are on the way in our Jackson and Hattiesburg areas. Please read the area announcements for additional information.

Please take a moment to check our online billing status before calling on account balances and check receipt. The information contained on our website is live data from our billing system and can help answer most questions. If you feel the information is in error, please e-mail or call our Accounting Department 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM Monday-Friday.

Looking for a tech support job? We may be looking for you as well. Please take a look at this announcement if you are interested in gaining expert training in this growing industry.

The outage mentioned above effected the Jackson Area for sometime and several services were out as of 2:25 AM.

Saturday, November 2

Good news for Hattiesburg/Laurel.

Sunday, October 27

There have been reports of occasional mis-connections in the Hattiesburg area. Netdoor and Bellsouth are on site investigating the issue and should have a resolution shortly. It is conceivable that some of the equipment may need to be reset, which would result in a temporary disconnection. Please report any problems that you may be having in the area to, or if you're not able to send email, call 800.952.1570, 24 hours a day.

Friday, October 25

As a performance boost, we have moved the SMTP and POP3 mail services to a dedicated machine. This should dramatically improve the performance of this widely used service. Our shell account users should not be negatively impacted by this move as well. There is no need to change your mail settings to take advantage of this addition.

Our Hattiesburg Area Customers had a few troubles last night. Please take a moment to read this announcement.

Did someone say a Quake Server was coming? Look here for the announcement.

We encourage our customers to take a look at our online billing program. Not only can you check your current account status, but check online usage as well. Although this is not a finished product, the information is "real-time" with our actual billing program used in our accounting department. Check out our Online Billing Program here.

Sunday, October 20

In addition to our news feed from UUNet Technologies, we will be adding a complementing news feed from MCI. This multiple source feeding will increase the timeliness of many newsgroups. Also, MCI has a good reputation for their news feeds. We are taking this configuration time to upgrade the news server's operating system as well, so it should be unavailable starting at 2:30 tomorrow morning. The upgrade should not last more that three hours, however, one can check the status of our network systems at any time by clicking on the Network Status Report link at the top of this page.

During this very same maintenance window, we will be upgrading the performance of both our mail service and our shell service by moving the mail service off of the shell server and onto a new machine. Nothing will change with either your mail or news setup.

Monday, October 14

Several terminal servers were rebooted last night as part of our regular maintanence schedule. Those who were online at the time should have received an apology for the temporary disconnect.

Thanks to all for the positive feedback from the new statement and billing options wizard. As workload permits, we will be adding new account features to our existing suite of online customer forms.

Thursday, August 29

Early on the morning of August 27, several thousand e-mail messages were sent to our customers to inform them of their account status and the availability of new ways to pay their bill and receive statements. Although this message was sent to help clarify accounts, it seemed to introduce some amount of confusion. Due to this, we would like to explain in greater detail our Internet billing policies. Please take a moment to read the following detailed account example.

We would like to encourage everyone to have their statements e-mailed to their accounts to save time and money for us. We can mail them via the old postal system, but additional administrative savings free capital for more modem facilities, more local access numbers and other necessary upgrades.

As there are new statement and billing options, we encourage everyone to signup for them.

Friday, August 23 -- Revisited
We will be using a UNIX-like OS on PC hardware starting Saturday morning for the news server. The swap will require we lose the articles now collected, but the speed increase we expect to gain is worth it. We will bring the old server down at 2:00 AM on Saturday morning for the conversion. It will take approximately 2-3 hours for the install of the OS and the necessary configuration changes for a news server. At this time, it should begin receiving news articles and allow posts.

Thanks to all for the comments that have encouraged our swap to yet another operating system. We hope, as you do, this will be the last.

We would also like to thank Photo Images for providing us with the expo display materials and helping make our last two public outings such a success. Hope to see you soon at the next public affair for Internet Doorway.

Please e-mail or call the NOC at 800.952.1570 for more information.

Wednesday, August 21

On Wednesday, August 21, our primary DNS server had what appeared to be a failure of the main root drive. As this server is primarily responsible for resolving host names for our clients, there was an extended period that the Internet was almost inaccessible.

Our Information Technologies department hurriedly placed the backup machine in its place to handle the load, but for some reason it failed. Working as quickly as possible, the DNS server was repaired and all files restored.

We will be looking into the reasons for the failure of the redundant machine that took over when this situation occurred. We apologize for any inconvenience this situation may have caused you. If you have further questions, please contact our Support department at 800.952.1570 any time, 24 hours a day, or via email at

The news server crashed today, disrupting our news service for most of the day. Repairs are underway. We have been the victim of Quantum and Seagate drive failures several times now and consultations with Sun and the drive manufacturers have never been successful in isolating the problems. In the interest of reliability we have decided to take another tact, forgoing the usual Sun SparcStation and installing an NT based news server with dual ultra-wide scsi (Small-Computer Systems Interface) cards and an array of four drives for our 15 gigabyte news space. The new parts for this transition have been ordered and are expected by mid-afternoon Tuesday, at which time the news server is expected to be operational again. Other news server improvements are forthcoming and will be announced herein.

We apologize for the any inconvenience caused. While the new news server is being built, you may wish to read news from an anonymous news source, such as Or you might want to check out a public NNTP news server search engine.

Friday, August 9

The news server will be down for a short period between 6:00 and 9:00 p.m. this evening for an operating system upgrade. We expect no problems and regular service will return after the upgrade. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
